Eating Seasonally

There has been a lot of hype lately about eating seasonally, and although it may seem like a new fad, it has actually been the way our ancestors lived thousands of years ago. They were only able to eat what was available for them to hunt and gather. There were no grocery stores and no Amazon Fresh! So why exactly is it so important to eat seasonally?

  • Your fruits and vegetables will be the freshest if you eat seasonally. This way, they do not need to be shipped across the country. You are also being environmentally conscious and helping the carbon footprint. Reduced fuel costs!!
  • Eating seasonally also promotes buying local, which is always a wonderful way to support farmers, and farmers markets. You can also look into a CSA-Community Supported Agriculture, which is when you buy into a share of fresh, local produce and it gets delivered or you pick it up on a regular basis. CSA’s are fun not only for the local and fresh aspect, but you also never know what you might be getting from week to week, so it encourages you to think out of the box and try new foods!
  • You get a lot of nutritional variety. Buying fruits and veggies that are grown in season means they were harvested recently and therefore have the maximum antioxidant and vitamin content.
  • You can save a lot of money! Prices will be lower for local, fresh produce.
